Nearly half of college students say they’ve considered switching majors out of fear about what AI will do to the job market. If that surprises you, ask your own student.

The anxiety is real, and it surfaces in the quiet moment after the acceptance letter arrives: Will this major even matter by the time I graduate?

It’s a fair question, but not quite the right one.

The better question isn’t “Is my major safe?” It’s two questions working together: Will the work this major leads to still need a human? And does this program actually help my student adapt when the work changes? Families obsess over the first and rarely ask the second.

AI isn’t erasing the job market. It’s sorting it

Underneath the headlines is a calmer truth: AI isn’t erasing jobs so much as sorting them. Some fields are pulling ahead. Some front doors are narrowing. And much of the panic comes from treating one hard hiring year as a permanent verdict. So help your student look at where durable human demand actually lives.

Follow the work that needs a human in the room.

Healthcare leads. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects healthcare to be the fastest-growing sector of the economy over the next decade, adding roughly two million jobs, more than any other sector. Nurse practitioners are projected to be the fastest-growing occupation in the entire economy, with physician assistants and mental health roles close behind. The reason is simple and unstoppable: the population is aging, and you can’t ask a chatbot to set a bone or sit with a frightened patient.

The same logic reaches well beyond scrubs, into skilled trades, counseling, teaching, and any work built on judgment, empathy, and trust. If your student is drawn there, encourage them. That’s not the “safe boring” path; it’s work the future keeps asking for.

The trickier picture: coding and computer science

Here’s where families get the story half-right. You’ve probably heard “coding is dead.” That’s not what the data says. Recent computer science graduates are facing one of their toughest markets in years, with unemployment higher than many other majors. Entry-level coding roles have shrunk since 2022, as AI now handles much of the routine work that used to be a new grad’s first job.

But before your student flees a field they love, give them the whole picture. Software roles overall are still projected to grow, the degree still pays well, and graduates who land a job usually land a real one. As one analyst put it, the front door got harder to walk through while the building kept getting bigger. What changed is which doors are open: demand is booming for people who pair coding with a specialty—AI, cybersecurity, cloud, data—and soft for the generalist who can only say “I can code.” In short, coding isn’t a bad bet. Coding without specialization and relationships is.

Now ask whether this program will exist

Here’s the step almost no family takes. Even a strong field can be a weak bet at a particular school. Colleges quietly cut, merge, and starve low-enrollment majors all the time. A student can enroll in a major that gets phased out, or one where a required course runs only every other fall, pushing graduation back a year and costing real money.

So before your student commits, have them do a little detective work. At an admitted-students day, or on a quick call to the department, ask:

  • How many students are in this major, and how has that number moved over five years? Small can mean intimate. It can also mean vulnerable.
  • How often are the required core courses offered—every semester, every year, or every other year? This is the hidden graduation-timeline risk.
  • Has the school cut or merged programs recently, and how is this department funded?
  • What share of graduates are employed or in grad school within six months, and how early does the department connect students to internships?

A healthy program answers these easily and proudly. A fragile one gets vague, and vague is information, too.

The real hedge: build a student who adapts

Nobody can perfectly predict which majors will thrive in twenty years. So stop hunting for the one “AI-proof” major and instead raise a student who adapts no matter which way the wind blows.

Whatever they study, encourage the timeless skills machines can’t replicate: clear writing, critical thinking, working well with people, and the judgment to question a confident wrong answer. Push them to become fluent with AI rather than afraid of it. And have them practice, early and often, the relationships that open doors long before a job is ever posted. A student like that doesn’t need the perfect major. They are the hedge.

Final thought

Will your student’s major exist in the AI era? Some will boom, some will bend, and a few will quietly disappear from a given campus, but that was always going to be true, with or without AI. Your job as their coach isn’t to find the one guaranteed-safe path. It’s to help them choose work the future still needs, ask hard questions about the program before they commit, and build the adaptable, human skills that outlast any job title.

Do that, and it won’t matter much what the machines learn to do next.
